Regain Energy with One Simple Question

ARVE Error: Mode: lazyload not available (ARVE Pro not active?), switching to normal mode

I want to teach you a powerful exercise called “laddering up”. This is a purposeful way of creating a positive daydream about your professional contribution to the world. It centers around the repeated question, “What is the best possible outcome of that?”

I’ll give you a corporate example, a personal example and a nonprofit example.

“What is the best possible outcome of that?”

Corporate: Let’s say you’re a manager of a sales team and you’re writing a new manual for a health food company.

  • Ask yourself, what’s the best possible outcome of that? We’d have a more organized sales team.
  • And what’s the best possible outcome of that? The sales team would close more deals.
  • And what’s the best possible outcome of that? Our company would grow and expand.
  • And the best possible outcome of that is more people would eat healthy, delicious food.
  • And the best outcome of that is that is people would live longer, healthier lives.

Bingo! That’s the top of the ladder! What you see at the top of the ladder is the image that will inspire you.

Personal: Let’s say I’m getting up at five in the morning to do a podcast interview about Zoom effectiveness. Am I truly inspired? I need to ladder up.

  • I need to ask, what is the best possible outcome of that? People everywhere would be on less Zoom calls every day.
  • And what is the best possible outcome of that? They would have more time for meaningful work and the workday would end earlier.
  • And what is the best possible outcome of that? They would have time for leisure and time with family.
  • And what is the best possible outcome of that? Close, connected, loving families.

Can I get up for close, connected, loving families? You bet I can.

When you bring images of best possible outcomes to your mind, they fortify and fuel your body.

Nonprofit: When we’re in a giving organization it seems like the laddering up should be obvious, but sometimes we stay in the present and forget. Let’s say you work for a water charity and you’re working on the donor page for the website.

  • You ask yourself, what is the best possible outcome of that? More donations.
  • And what is the best possible outcome of that? All of our programs would be fully funded.
  • And what is the best possible outcome of that? We would build more wells everywhere.
  • And what is the best possible outcome of that? Children drinking clear, clean, close-by water.

When you bring images of best possible outcomes to your mind, they fortify and fuel your body.

It’s like imagining your work as a feel-good movie. This exercise brings you to the last scene—the one where the music swells beneath it and you get goosebumps. If you connect with this end result, if you watch the end of that movie, I promise you it will infuse you with energy you didn’t know you had.

Be gentle. Be optimistic. Ladder up. And until then, I hope to see you very soon at The Global Leadership Summit on August 5-6, 2021!
